The American Declaration of Independence signed in 1776 states the following: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”.
In 1789, the French created the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. Among other things, it states: "All the citizens, being equal in the eyes of the law, are equally admissible to all public dignities, places, and employments, according to their capacity and without distinction other than that of their virtues and of their talents," eliminating the special rights of the nobility and clergy”.
All modern democratic states today promote individual freedom and equality as the corner stones of their democracy.
That being said, it upsets and concerns me when, in today’s society we still refer to these principles, but fail to live up to them, especially when it comes to equality before the eyes of the law for all, including those of noble status as well as political and religious leaders.
The Pope declared that the Catholic Church will deal with the molesting priests who have devastated and ruined the lives of many children. How on earth can that be possible in today’s society? The molesters should be made to stand trial before a court of law, as do all those accused of crimes, and should be judged and convicted accordingly. How can any person who is morally fit and with their right mind be part of an organizations that doesn’t take this issue seriously.
Prime Ministers and high level politicians are pardoned from having to be tried in a court of law as long as they maintain their power? They have immunity! Why? For what reason? Anyone who commits a crime should stand trial regardless of their position in society and not be excused, as was Mitterrand, the former Prime of France.
If, however, anyone who is a regular citizen commits even a minor illegal act, the authorities are there to bring that person to court and penalize them if convicted. After all, as we know, a society is built on certain norms that everyone has to accept, otherwise there will be chaos. Obviously, however, and unfortunately, this is only so for regular citizens, not those who are privileged, not politicians and definitely not religious leaders.
George Orwell’s “Animal Farm” suddenly comes to mind, in which the pigs are running society.
And they stated:
“All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others”.
